About

We are a group of folks in Grand Rapids, MI who put on Really Really Free Market (RRFM) and Food Not Bombs (FNB) events in our community. We do an event on the 1st Sunday of every month (the winter months are a little tricky though).

RRFM: is a gathering of people who bring something to share for free. This can be clothes, toys, books, skills, services, music, performances... it can be anything. The point of all this is to build a community where we can take care of each other without the need for money. It's kind of like a community garage sale, but everything is free.Along with that, some of the more exciting RRFMs have music, free haircuts, classes on how to garden and all sorts of other interesting things. Whatever skill, knowledge, resources or abilities you have, you're invited to bring to the RRFM to share. We try to schedule people ahead of time (see our "get involved" page) but anyone can show up on the fly.

FNB: too many people go hungry everyday while the world's governments seem to always find money for more war. Food Not Bombs finds vegetarian and vegan food that would otherwise go to waste and cook meals to serve in public to anyone for free. Many FNBs groups around the world set up a weekly meal, some groups try to show up for activist events (like mass protests) to feed people. Each group is unique.

Both RRFM and FNB are kind of unique. People all over the world put on and participate in these groups in independent "chapters". No one is in charge of it. It's kind of like having a BBQ, anyone can do it anywhere they want. Our group doesn't need to be the only Really Really Free Market or Food Not Bombs in town, there have been times when there were 2 RRFM's on the same day in different parts of town, and that's awesome!

If you'd like to start your own group see our franchise page for info.

From Wikipedia entry on Really Really Free Market:
"The Really, Really Free Market (RRFM) movement is a horizontally-organized collective of individuals who form a temporary market based on an alternative gift economy. The RRFM movement aims to counteract capitalism in a proactive way. It holds as a major goal to build a community based on sharing resources, caring for one another and improving the collective lives of all. Markets often vary in character, but they generally offer both goods and services. Participants bring unneeded items and food, as well as skills and talents such as entertainment or haircuts. A RRFM usually takes place in an open community space such as a public park or community commons."
